When you spend a lot of time out of doors, you come to realize that nature is extremely unpredictable. Even if you are only going on a short day hike, you need to include a basic contingency plan in your preparations.
As a minimum, you should have plenty of water and first aid kits for each of your party. You should also never take a hike or back country trip without leaving your expected location and timeline with a friend or family member at home. Many potential disasters have been avoided because people followed these basic rules.
To put together a basic kit, you will probably want to think of normal every day medical needs. Start with what you would normally have on hand anyways. This includes things like band aids, peroxide, alcohol, antiseptic and antibiotic. If you have members of your family who suffer from allergies, you will probably have hydrocortisone or benadryl as well.
Most of these can also be obtained by purchasing a ready made kit, which is even more convenient. Next, keep at least a two week to one month supply of prescription medications on hand. This can include things like heart medications or inhalers for asthma. In an emergency situation, you’re unlikely to find a pharmacy open, so these can be life saving measures and should not be overlooked.
If you have a larger family or just anticipate needing a more comprehensive first aid supply, you may want to purchase one of the larger first aid kits or even add specific items to your basic emergency supply. Larger kits still include the basic items mentioned above, but in larger quantity.
Whether your child scrapes his knee at the park or you get a headache right in the middle of your commute, you will have something on hand to relieve the problem. There’s even smaller kits available that can be put in a purse or briefcase for even more convenience. You never know when someone will need what you have on hand.
When you prepare for emergencies, try to think of possible scenarios and include items in your first aid kits to take care of the possibilities.
You always plan hoping that you never have to use your preparedness supplies. However, you will have confidence and peace of mind knowing that if anything does happen, you will be ready.
